Discussion of the name
Deorwulf is an Old English masculine name comprising either dēor ‘brave, bold, ferocious’ or dēore ‘beloved, valuable, noble’ as first element compounded with wulf ‘wolf’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 223; Insley 2003: 377).There are 17 entries for Deorwulf in the PASE corpus, of whom Deorwulf 1-3 are from the ninth century, Deorwulf 4 from the late tenth, Deorwulf 5 is a catch-all for occurrences in DB and Deorwulf 6-17 are moneyers active at various mints between 852-1017; to these can be added the Deorulf occurring in the tenth-century ‘Hatfield list’ (Pelteret 1986: 473). The name can therefore be regarded as unusual in frequency, and perhaps more so by the mid-eleventh century than previously.
