Discussion of the name

Eadræd is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements ead ‘prosperity, happiness’ and ræd ‘advice, counsel’;  it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between DB spellings for this name and those for Æthelræd because ‘d’ could be used to represent /d/ or /th/.

Although there is only one entry for this form of the name in the PASE corpus (Eadræd 1, a catch-all category for occurrences in DB) there are 36 entries under the form Eadred, of which Eadred 1-30 (there is no (Unknown Person)) occur between 704-1038 and Eadred 31-37 are moneyers (of whom Eadred 32, a London moneyer active 1046-56, was the latest).  For simplicity, this sequence is maintained here and the DB instances profiled below are numbered from Eadræd 38 onwards.
