Discussion of the name

Eadstan is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements ēad ‘prosperity, happiness’ and stān ‘stone, rock, gem’.  The ambiguous DB forms Æstanus and Estan(us) can represent either Eadstan or Æthelstan (such forms are profiled under the head-form *Æstan unless other evidence points to identifying them as Eadstan or Æthelstan), and the potential for scribal substitution or misreading of ‘d’ for ‘ð’ must also be allowed for (von Feilitzen 1937: 98, 101-3, 182, 188, 237).

There are 23 entries in the PASE corpus for Eadstan, all occurring from c.840 onwards and with Eadstan 13 being a catch-all for occurrences in DB and Eadstan 14-23 being moneyers; in addition, Æstan 1 in the PASE corpus is probably to be identified with Eadstan 24 below.
