Discussion of the name
Ealdbeorht is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements eald ‘old, experienced, honoured’ and beorht ‘bright, distinguished, pure’.Although there is only one entry under Ealdbeorht in the PASE corpus (Ealdbeorht 1, a catch-all for occurrences in DB) there are 21 entries under the spelling Ealdberht (all pre-dating c.900) together with 2 under Aldberht (both continental and pre-dating c.800). This suggests that the once-common name had become very much less popular among the landed elite of the later Anglo-Saxon period.
