Discussion of the name

Ealdwig is a masculine OE name formed from the elements eald (‘old, honoured, eminent’) and wīg (‘battle’). Although both elements were widely used, in combination the name was rare, being recorded only thrice before 1066, as the names of two monks (Ealdwig 1 + Ealdwig 3; Ealdwig 2) and a moneyer (Ealdwig 5), all in or after the later tenth century. The second element was liable to confusion in DB with –wine, and the Aldui who held Chew Stoke (Som.) in both 1066 and 1086 and whose name has hitherto been interpreted as Ealdwig (e.g. von Feilitzen 1937: 242) is now identified as Ealdwine 18.
