Discussion of the name
Ealdwine is a masculine OE name formed from the elements eald (‘old, honoured, eminent’) and wine (‘friend, protector, lord’). It was in use by the seventh century and continued to be widely employed in the eleventh: sixteen examples are currently recorded in PASE and twenty-four in the Durham Liber Vitae (DLV: II, 110). The chronological pattern generally and at Durham suggests that the name was rising in popularity from c. 1000 onwards.Spellings in Ald– and less commonly Eld– distinguish the name Ealdwine from Alwine (i.e. Ælfwine), spelled Al–or El–, though one should always bear in mind the possibility that a careless scribe might mistake the less common name Ealdwine for the more common Ælfwine. The second element –wine was liable to confusion with –wig, as in the example here of Ealdwine 18.
