Discussion of the name
Ealhhere is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements ealh ‘temple’ and here ‘troop, army, host’. DB uses ‘ch’ and EDB uses ‘g’ to represent OE /χ/; the DB form Alchen is included here under Ealhhere because a scribal error of ‘n’ for ‘r’ is more likely than von Feilitzen’s suggestion that it was a form of Old Norse Alfkil (von Feilitzen 1937: 122, 143, 242).There are 18 entries for Ealhhere and one for Alchere in the PASE corpus, all of which pre-date the tenth century except for Ealhhere 15, a catch-all for occurrences in DB). The distribution of the PASE corpus suggests a name in widespread use that became less popular after the ninth century.
