Discussion of the name

Ed(d)a occurs in Old English as both a masculine and a feminine name and probably developed from either the names Eada (masc.) or Eadu (fem.) or as a shortened form for other names beginning with Ead~, from ead ‘prosperity, happiness’ (Redin 1919: 40, 47-8, 65).

There are four entries for the name Eada in the PASE corpus, all masculine and all from c.900 or earlier, and three for the names Eda and Edda. Of these, Eda 1 was the daughter of someone in the Teesside area in the late eleventh century, Edda 1 occured as a rusticus ‘countryman’ in Kent in 968 and Edda 2 is a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB.
