Discussion of the name

Gauti is an Old Norse masculine name, probably derived from an Old Swedish element or byname meaning ‘man from Gautland’; formally, the DB spellings with ‑o‑ could include instances of Gøti, the Old Danish form of the name (von Feilitzen 1937: 66 §37, 258, 274; Fellows Jensen 1968: lxxviii-lxxix, §§46-7, 98, 349).

There are three entries for Gauti in the PASE corpus: Gauti 1 may have been a Suffolk landholder under King Harold II (Harold 3); Gauti 2 is a catch-all category for occurrences of the name in DB; and Gauti 3 was a London moneyer during the 1020s. There are also PASE entries for Goti 1 (a DB catch-all category) and Gouti 1 (a Norfolk witness to a mid-eleventh-century will), which represent variant forms of the name Gauti. The small PASE corpus and the scatter of DB instances of this name suggest that its use in England was extremely rare and confined to the region between Norfolk and the lower Thames, although its use need not imply that the bearer was of foreign rather than insular birth.
