Discussion of the name

Heardwulf is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements heard ‘hard, strong, bold’ and wulf ‘wolf’.

Of the two entries for Heardwulf in the PASE corpus, Heardwulf 1 is a catch-all category for those appearing in DB and Heardwulf 2 was an early ninth-century moneyer at York. Although Searle (1897: 286) records a further two pre-Conquest examples not noted by PASE, this very low number of occurrences suggests that the name Heardwulf was extremely rare (as was the first element heard) and the similarly limited Domesday evidence is in keeping with this.
