Discussion of the name
Here is an Old English masculine name, presumably a shortened form of names in here- ‘troop, army, host’ such as Herefrith or Hereweald. Because the DB form Her lacks the final vowel von Feiltzen (1937: 289) preferred a derivation from Old Norse hjorr ‘sword’, but reasons are given under Here 2 for rejecting this interpretation and preferring the Old English explanation. The are no pre-Domesday occurrences of this name in the PASE corpus.
