Discussion of the name
Herling is a Continental Germanic masculine name, probably an -ing derivative of a compound with heri ‘army’ as its first element; like the ‘eng’ of Herleng, the ‘enc’ of the DB form Erlenc points to a continental origin and hence its inclusion here rather than under the name Ærling (von Feilitzen 1937: 248).The only related entries in the PASE corpus are for Erlenc 1 and Herling 1, catch-all categories for the DB forms dealt with here, and for Erling 1, a form dealt with under Ærling.
