Discussion of the name

The name standardized here as Hueta is of uncertain derivation. Redin (1919: 41, 50) and von Feilitzen (1937: 294) considered an Old English masculine name *Hwæta or *Hwata derived from OE hwæt ‘sharp’ to be the most likely, although Redin also noted the feminine name Hwatu; another possibility could be a name based on the Old Cornish hueth ‘peaceful, happy’ (cf. Padel 1985: 135), although no such name is on record. In either case, however, it is likely that the Exon form is to be preferred and that, as von Feilitzen observed, the DB scribe’s ‹ch› is an error for the ‹t› of Exon; for this reason ‘Hueta’ rather than ‘Hueche’ is adopted as the head-form here.
