Discussion of the name
Iusten is the Old Danish form of the Old Norse masculine name Iósteinn comprising the elements jó ‘horse’ and stein ‘stone’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 67-8, 301; Fellows Jensen 1968: 158).There are five related entries for this name in the PASE corpus: Iustan 1 and 2 represent a moneyer at Lincoln in the early eleventh century while Iustan 3 was one at York in the late 970s; Iusten 1 is a catch-all category for occurrences in DB; and Justin 1 was a Viking leader in the 990s. Since all these entries represent variants of the same name, the sequence below commences with Iusten 6.
