Discussion of the name
Leofa is a masculine Old English name consisting of the single element lēof (‘dear’) in its weak form (with an ending in –a). The equivalent strong form, Leof, is regarded as ‘not evidenced with certainty’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 310). The corresponding female name Leofe is on record in 1086 and later (Douglas 1932: 33; DLV: II, 179), and von Feilitzen noted that it might be represented in DB Huntingdonshire by the spelling Leue here assigned to Leofa 13.Leofa was reasonably common before the generation represented in DB, especially among moneyers of the earlier eleventh century.
