Discussion of the name

Leohtgifu is an otherwise unrecorded Old English feminine name comprising the elements lēoht ‘light’ and gifu ‘gift’. The rare first element occurs in other Germanic names and in that of another TRE landholder nearby (Leohtwine 2), which aids the interpretation of the DB and IE forms here as Leohtgifu; the representation of /χ/ as ‘s’ could be linguistic or orthographic (von Feilitzen 1937: 121-2, 319; Campbell 1968: 129-30, 186-7; cf. Förstemann 1900: 1051, 1056-7; Morlet 1968: 158).
