Discussion of the name

Lutting, an Old English masculine name probably originating as an -ing derivative of a simplex or compound name based on OE lytel ‘little’, is the most likely explanation of the DB form Luttinus; less likely is that it represents the Old French name Lutin or, even less likely, an Anglo-Scandinavian formation based on Old Norse Lútr (Redin 1919: 174; von Feilitzen 1937: 322 (contra Forssner 1916: 180); cf. Searle 1897: 342-3; Tengvik 1938: 189-90; von Feilitzen 1976: 164).

The only entries in the PASE corpus are for Lutting 1, the supposed founder of a minster at Soham in the mid-eight century, and Lutting 2, a catch-all for occurrences in DB. It is perhaps notable that all four recorded instances of this extremely rare name occur in East Anglia.
