Nowy

Discussion of the name

Nowy is an Old Welsh masculine name sometimes seen normalized as Noe or Nogui (von Feilitzen 1937: 332). It was not common at any period: the Welsh genealogies, the Book of Llandaff charters, and the Welsh annals between them yield only Nowy ab Arthur of Dyfed, fl. c. 625, Nowy, king of Powys, born c. 730; Nowy ap Gwriad, king of Gwent c. 950–80; and (if the same name) Nwy ab Egri of Talybolion (Anglesey), assigned to the generation born c. 1100 (Bartrum 1974: V, pp. 76, 160; Bartrum 1966: 86, 149; Davies 1979: index; Lloyd 1911: I, 244, 348). There were no Nowys among the hundreds of persons involved in the surviving acta of the Welsh princes 1120–1283 (Pryce 2005: index).
