Discussion of the name

The English name Owine was probably adapted from the Welsh name Owain (Owen) in the late Anglo-Saxon period. Another possible source is the revival of an old name known to Bede as that of the leader of the East Anglian household of St Æthelthryth (Etheldreda) who accompanied her to Northumbria, became a monk with St Chad at Lastingham, and accompanied him to Lichfield when he became bishop there (PASE: Owine 1; Bede, HE, iv.3, pp. 338–43; Farmer 1992: 373–4). Given the geographical locations of the people called Owine recorded in charters of the mid eleventh century (PASE: Owine 2–5) and in DB, a Welsh origin is the more likely. The name was easily adapted by turning the final syllable into the common OE English name-element wine ‘friend, protector, lord’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 415), though Owine was not meaningful in OE in the way that other dithematic personal names in –wine were.
