Discussion of the name
Sibbi is a masculine name of Danish origin, the short form of ODan Sigbjorn (von Feilitzen 1937: 358; Fellows Jensen 1968: 230). It does not seem to have been widely used in England, and no examples of it before the time of DB have yet been recorded. Its absence from the minor place-names and later personal nomenclature of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire suggests that it did not reach England during the Viking settlement period but was first used in the eleventh century by settlers under Cnut.Bibliography
