Discussion of the name

Siduwine is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements sidu ‘custom, manner, conduct, purity’ and wine ‘friend, protector, lord’.

The only entry for Siduwine in the PASE corpus is Siduwine 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB. There are, however, five PASE entries for the name Sidewine, which von Feilitzen (1937: 359) regarded as linguistically identical with Siduwine. All five instances of Sidewine occur in the period 979-1005, with Sidewine 1 being a witness (from Paddlesworth in Kent) to a Rochester charter and Sidewine 2-5 being moneyers associated with Cambridge, Rochester (twice) and London; it is possible that all five instances refer to a single person. Although a small handful of further instances are given by Searle (1897: 416-17), it is clear that the names Siduwine and Sidewine were extremely rare.
