Discussion of the name

Sigeweald is a masculine OE name formed from the elements sige (‘victory’) and weald (‘power, ruler’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 361). It occurs sporadically throughout the Anglo-Saxon period, being found as the name variously of charter witnesses, priests, and moneyers, with nine persons currently recorded in PASE (Sigewald 1, 3, 4; Sigeweald 1–5; Siwald 1) and another in the Durham Liber Vitae (LVD: II, 148). A Greek bishop at the court of King Edgar in the later 950s or 960s took the name (Sigewald 5), probably because it was the equivalent in meaning to his Greek name Nicephoros (Blake 1962: p. 73 (ii.2); Fairweather 2005: p. 96 and note 20). The cognate ON name, Sigvaldr, seems not to be evidenced in England (e.g. Fellows Jensen 1968).
