Discussion of the name

Sigmund is a masculine name of Scandinavian origin, ON Sigmundr (von Feilitzen 1937: 363), formed from the elements sigr ‘victory’ and mundr ‘protector’. Although the name was rare in Denmark (Fellows Jensen 1968: 233), the one person in Domesday Book known for certain to have borne it was explicitly a Dane (Sigmund 2).

The corresponding OE name Sigemund is recorded in the ninth century (PASE: Sigemund 1–2; LVD: II, 147–8), but the East Anglian moneyer of the period 895–918 (PASE: Sigemund 4) and the Simund son of O[s]mund who was a minor landowner in Cambridgeshire in the 980s (PASE: Simund 1 + Sigemund 3) on balance probably had the Scandinavian name.

Two 1086 undertenants (Sigmund 3, Sigmund 4) probably also bore the Scandinavian name rather than its CG equivalent.
