Discussion of the name

Sigref is a masculine name of Scandinavian origin, ODan Sigréfr, formed from elements meaning ‘battle’ and ‘joy’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 364; Björkman 1910: 121). The DB spelling Sirof is probably is miscopying of Siraf, the form of the name preserved in the only other known occurrence in Anglo-Saxon England, namely the father of two witnesses to an Abingdon charter of the 970s (S 1216).
