Discussion of the name

Snotta is a normalizing of the Exon (397a1) form Estnota and is probably an Old English masculine name related to the name Snot, perhaps from an OE word *snot ‘nose, snout’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 368). Although it is not otherwise recorded from pre-Conquest England, Exon forms are generally more reliable than those of DB and Snotta is therefore the head-form adopted here. If the DB form Snode is the more accurate spelling, however, then a name related to or derived from OE snōd ‘hood, head-dress’ is possible (Redin 1919: 130). This too is not otherwise recorded from pre-Conquest England; but the possibly related name Snodd(a) occurs in place-names in Berkshire, Kent, Wiltshire and Worcestershire (S 280; S 597; S 786; Gover et al. 1939: 282; Watts 2004: 557).

The only entry in the PASE corpus is for Snotta 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB.
