Discussion of the name

Sotmann is an Old English masculine name of uncertain derivation.  The second element is mann ‘person, man’ but the first could be either OE sōt ‘soot’ or else an OE sōt or sott ‘foolish, dull’ borrowed from Old French or Latin; in either case the name may have originated as a byname (von Feilitzen 1937: 369; Tengvik 1938: 335).

The only entry in the PASE corpus is for Sotmann 1, a catch-all category for occurrences in DB.
