Discussion of the name

The name given as Taldus has hitherto been written off as obscure (von Feilitzen 1937: 382), but must in fact be Welsh, since its only bearer in DB held land in the Welsh district of Archenfield. It may represent the name Tewdws, which occurs very occasionally in the earlier portions of the Welsh genealogies (Bartrum 1974: V, p. 78), and more pertinently in the Llandaff charters as the patronym of a major figure in Gwent in the 1060s and earlier 1070s. That historical figure is discussed under Taldus 2. This solution to the name is not clear-cut: the spelling in DB accurately represents the pronunciation of the final syllable of Tewdws, but not the first.
