Discussion of the name
Theodric is a Continental Germanic masculine name comprising the elements thioda ‘folk, people’ and rîchi ‘mighty, powerful’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 383-4; Forssner 1916: 19, 230-3). The name was rare in Anglo-Saxon England. The PASE database currently identifies only half a dozen occurrences of the name: three kings who ruled in Burgundy in the sixth and seventh centuries; a tenth-century monk in the circle of Bishop Æthelwold; and two individuals names in documents drawn up during the reign of King William I.Bibliography
