Discussion of the name
The name Toiswald is of unknown derivation. It occurs in Domesday Book in the form Toisuuald and in Exon (224a3) as Toiswaldus. Von Feilitzen (1937: 95, 387) followed a misreading of the Exon form as Torsuualdus, which led him to propose that the underlying name was Old English Torhtweald and that the DB form was an error. However, the Exon form quite clearly has -i- rather than -r-; it also looks as though the scribe originally wrote an -h- before writing the -d- closer to correct the spelling to -ld-. Because of these uncertainties, Toiswald is adopted as the head-form here. It is normalized as Tortwald in the Phillimore edition and as Torhtweald in the Alecto edition. The only related entry in the PASE corpus is Torhtweald 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of that name in DB; to avoid further confusion, however, the profile given below is therefore named as Toiswald 2.
