Discussion of the name

Winterled derives ultimately from the ON name Vetrliðr, originally a byname with the literal meaning ‘winter-traveller’ which was evidently coined in the Norwegian Atlantic diaspora and not at first used in Norway itself (von Feilitzen 1937: 403; Fellows Jensen 1968: 271). Its earliest appearances in England show that the name had been thoroughly Anglicized in the form Winterled by the mid-eleventh century at latest. It first occurs as the name of a moneyer at York in the 990s, whose name the die-cutter rendered Winterleda, using the English runic wynn for the initial letter (EMC: 1007.0320). That moneyer is currently the only person of this name recorded in PASE (Winterled 1).

The Phillimore edition uses the form Winterled in Cambridgeshire and Winterlet in Cheshire; Alecto normalized them under the original ON form Vetrlithr.
