Discussion of the name

Æthelheard is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements æðele ‘noble, famous’ and heard ‘hard, strong, bold’ (von Feilitzen 1937: 184).

There are around two dozen entries for Æthelheard in the PASE corpus, of which Æthelheard 1-22 (with two entries under Æthelheard 1) and Æthelheard 24 all pre-date c.860.  The four instances of the name occurring in the Durham Liber Vitae are also from ninth-century contexts (Insley et al. 2007: 86).  The only later but pre-Conquest instance of the name is Æthelheard 23, who witnessed a royal charter relating to Wells in 1068.  The impression given by these data, together with that from DB, is of a name that became less popular in the late Anglo-Saxon period than it had been in earlier centuries.
