Discussion of the name

The name which DB spells Cadiand was left unresolved by von Feilitzen (1937: 213), who noted merely that it was ‘evidently an OW name in Cat– (pron. kad–)’. It is in fact clearly the same as the Old Welsh masculine name Cadian, which appears once in the Welsh genealogies.

The Cadian of the genealogies features in the pedigree of Maredudd and Llywelyn Benwyn, which is traced back through Cadian to his grandfather Bod Hen. Cadian is assigned to the generation born c. 1100 (with large margins either side) and was the ancestor of families based in Arwystli, the cantref which encompassed the headwaters of the Wye and the Severn in mid Wales (Bartrum 1963: 108, 131, no. 18; Bartrum 1974: I, p. 129). On both geographical and chronological grounds there can be no connection with Cadian 2, but the existence of Cadian ap Cadfael Lwytgoed ap Bod Hen demonstrates the currency of the personal name in mid Wales in the later eleventh century.

Besides the solitary Cadian of the genealogies, there are three examples of Cadien (for Catgen) in the Book of Llandaff charters (dated between c. 650 and c. 980) (Davies 1979: index) but no similar name in the acta of the Welsh princes 1120–1283 (Pryce 2005: index).
