Discussion of the name
Hearding is an Old English masculine name comprising the element heard ‘hard, strong, bold’ and a name-forming -ing suffix that may have been a diminutive or byname formation in origin rather than a patronymic. It is recorded five times in the PASE corpus, one of whom (Hearding 4) is discussed below. With so few occurrences, the name should be regarded as ‘extremely rare’, although it is worth noting that the PASE, Domesday and other post-Conquest evidence suggest that it was becoming slightly more frequent during the second half of the eleventh century.
