Discussion of the name
Leofweard is a masculine OE name formed from the common elements lēof (‘dear’) and weard (‘guardian, protector’). The name is evidenced only from the tenth century onwards; the handful of examples currently in PASE include the abbot of Muchelney at the time of the Norman Conquest (Leofweard 3).Bibliography
