Discussion of the name

Mann is an Old English masculine name derived from mann ‘man’ (Redin 1919: 8; von Feilitzen 1937: 324); the DB form cannot formally be distinguished from that for the cognate Scandinavian name Man, but OE Mann is presumed here because it occurs in association with other OE names.

There are nine entries in the PASE corpus for Mann, of which Mann 1-8 occur between the mid-eighth and early eleventh centuries and Mann 9 is a catch-all for occurrences in DB. However, there are also six entries for Monn, a form that should be regarded as representing the name Mann and for which reason the profile given below is assigned as Mann 16; it is also probable that some of the moneyers entered under the head-form Man in PASE could in fact represent the name Mann.
