Discussion of the name
Ottar is an Old Danish masculine name (the Old Norse form is Óttarr) probably comprising the elements ótti ‘terror, fear’ and either *harjar ‘army’ or geirr ‘spear’; it also occurs in the Anglicized form Ohthere, as Oittir in the Irish annals and was also adopted into continental usage (Forssner 1916: 196; von Feilitzen 1937: 342; Fellows Jensen 1968: 207-6; Radner 1978: 180; Reaney 1997: 332). In DB there is a notable distinction between the forms for TRE holders (typically Otre) and the TRW forms (typically Other); the latter all seem to represent men of continental origin and are not included here. There are several related entries in the PASE corpus. Ohthere 1 was a visitor to Alfred 8’s court in the late ninth century; Ohtor 1-2 were early tenth-century earls; Ohtor 3 was a brother at Chertsey in the late eleventh century; Óttirr 1 represents a probable record of Ohtor 1 in Irish sources; and Ottar 1 is a catch-all for occurrences in DB. To accommodate these variants under the present head-form the profiles given below commence with Ottar 7.
