Discussion of the name

Cynegar is an Old English masculine name derived from cynn ‘rank, family, kin’ and gār ‘spear’.

The only entry in the PASE corpus is Cynegar 1, a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB. However, Searle notes a monk called Cynegar listed in the Durham Liber Vitae, which shows that although the name was clearly extremely rare it was not entirely un-evidenced in pre-Conquest England (Searle 1897: 155).
