Discussion of the name
Uhtræd is an OE masculine name formed from the elements ūht (‘dawn, dusk’) and ræd (‘counsel, wisdom’). It is reasonably well evidenced from the later eighth century onwards, not only in Northumbria (e.g. PASE: Uhtred 6, Uchtred 1, Uchtred 2/Uhtred 10) but also in western Mercia (PASE: Uhtred 2, Uhtred 4) and elsewhere (Uhtred 1, Uhtred 5, Uhtred 8). The evidence from Durham suggests that in the North it was becoming more common from the later eleventh century onwards (DLV: II, 155), probably through naming after Ealdorman Uhtræd of Northumbria (d. 1016) (PASE: Uchtred 2/Uhtred 10). That has created an erroneous impression that the name was specifically northern (e.g. Crouch 2004). The DB evidence underlines the transition from a name found widely across England to one closely associated with Northumbria and Yorkshire, though continuing in use elsewhere (Seltén 1972–9: II, 161).Bibliography
