Discussion of the name
Beorhtwulf is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements beorht ‘bright, distinguished, pure’ and wulf ‘wolf’.There are 24 entries for Beorhtwulf in the PASE corpus, all but two of which occur in or before the 970s; the two exceptions are Beorhtwulf 14 (a Suffolk landholder, profiled below) and Beorhtwulf 16 (a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB). The paucity of recorded instances from the late tenth and eleventh centuries suggests that the name Beorhtwulf became less popular among the late Anglo-Saxon élite (i.e. among those whose names tend to occur in surviving documents).
