Discussion of the name

The masculine name Gunni is a short form of the various Scandinavian names in Gunn–, the first element a word meaning ‘battle’.  It probably originated in Denmark and was in use in England during or soon after the Danish settlement of Lincolnshire, giving rise to two pre-Conquest place-names in the county. The difference in the twelfth century between its widespread use in Lincolnshire and limited use in Yorkshire suggests that its take-up may have been restricted (von Feilitzen 1937: 277; Fellows Jensen 1968: 116–17). Pre-Domesday instances in PASE are confined to a moneyer working at Bedford c. 1000 (Gunni 3) and the ‘earl’s companion’ buried under a sophisticated and expensive grave-stone at the Old Minster, Winchester, in the early eleventh century (Gunni 1; Tweddle 1995: 278–80 and illus. 509–13).
