Discussion of the name

Hunwine is an Old English masculine name, the first element deriving from either an OE word *hūn cognate with Old Norse húnn ‘bear-cub’ or one linked to the ethnic name of the Huns (Insley 2003: 376; contra von Feilitzen 1937: 295-6) and the second element being OE wine ‘friend, protector, lord’.

There are ten entries for Hunwine in the PASE corpus and one for the form Hunuwine. Of these, all except for Hunwine 1 (eighth-century) and Hunwine 4 (a catch-all category for instances of this name in DB) occur in eleventh-century south-western contexts; to these can also be added the Hunewine in a post-Conquest guild at Broadclyst, Devon (Insley and Probert: forthcoming).
