Discussion of the name
Munulf is a name of uncertain derivation that von Feilitzen regarded as of either Old Swedish or Continental Germanic origin (1937: 331; followed by Rumble 1986: DB 4,15 Note; cf. Björkman 1910: 97). Von Feilitzen did not offer an analysis of the elements and Förstemann (1990: 1136-8; cf. Morlet 1968: 170) regarded the first element of the putative CG form as uncertain, but in either case the second element is clearly one meaning ‘wolf’. Although a resolution does not appear possible on purely philological grounds, however, it should be noted that while both OSw and CG names would be unusual in pre-Conquest England a priest such as Munulf 2 is perhaps more likely to have had CG name. There are no pre-Domesday occurrences of this name in the PASE corpus.
