Discussion of the name

Sigewulf is a masculine Old English name formed from the elements sige (‘victory’) and wulf (‘wolf’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 363). Although both elements were productive in forming names throughout the period in which names are recorded, Sigewulf itself was not among the commonest names, with only fifteen examples from charter witness lists and the main narrative sources between the 780s and the 1060s (Sigewulf 1–12, 14–15), besides rather a large number (seventeen) in the original core of the Durham Liber Vitae (DLV: II, 149). Besides the solitary example in DB, its continuing use in the eleventh century is attested by a moneyer at Watchet (Som.) under William I and William II (EMC).
