Discussion of the name
Stanmær is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements stān ‘stone, rock, gem’ and mære ‘famous, great’. As von Feilitzen (1937: 371-2) in part observes, OE dithematic names with stān as first rather than second element are fairly rare, occur only after the early eleventh century and tend to have an East Anglian distribution, which suggests that they developed under the influence of names in Old Norse Steinn- or, more probably given the distribution, Old Danish Sten-. Note that an ON *Steinmarr is not certainly on record and therefore that the DB forms represent a genuine formation in OE rather than simply an anglicized borrowing of a Scandinavian name, although it is possible that the cognate and rare Continental Germanic name Ste(i)nmar is represented in the FBB forms (see Stanmær 5, below).Bibliography
