Discussion of the name
Ærling is the Old Swedish form of the Old Norse masculine name Erlingr, of uncertain derivation; the DB form could represent either name but perhaps favours the former, whereas there seems to be no evidence for the insular use of Erlingr (Bjorkman 1910: 37; cf. von Feilitzen 1937: 248).The only related entries in the PASE corpus are for Erling 1, a catch-all category for the DB form dealt with here, and for Erlenc 1 and Herling 1, representing forms dealt with under Herling.
