Discussion of the name

The DB forms are presumed to represent the Continental Germanic masculine name Modwin because a corresponding Old English form *Mōdwine is not on record (von Feilitzen 1937: 328), although Rumble (1983: DB Ch.68 Notes) noted that the existence of a TRE form in DB could lend weight to an OE derivation. The name comprises the elements muot (or OE mōd) ‘courage’ and wini (or OE wine) ‘friend, protector’.

The only entries in the PASE corpus are for Modwin 1 and Modwine 1, both being catch-alls for occurrences of this name in DB.
