Discussion of the name
Lagman is a masculine name of uncertain origin. The first element of the name could derive from OE laga (law), or from lagu (water, flood, sea, ocean); so the name could have meant either ‘law man’ or ‘sea man’. Von Feilitzen nevertheless regarded the name as Scandinavian, listing it under the head forms ‘ODan, OSw Lag(h)man ON Logmaðr (von Feilitzen 1937: 308).Bibliography
