Discussion of the name

Ordgar is an Old English masculine name comprising the elements ord, ‘point, spear-point, spear’, and gar ‘spear, dart, javelin’. PASE currently lists 11 persons bearing this name occurring in documents other than DB, all dating from the tenth and eleventh centuries. Several of these individuals were high status: they include three ealdormen (Ordgar 1, Ordgar 4, and Ordgar 6), two thegns who subscribed royal diplomas (Ordgar 2 and Ordgar 7); a person commemorated in the Liber Vitae of St Gallen in 929 (Ordgar 3); a moneyer associated with the mint of Shrewsbury in the reign of King Æthelred II (Ordgar 13); a servant of Queen Emma (Ordgar 10); and a Cambridgeshire witness of a will issued early in the reign of King Edward the Confessor (Ordgar 9). It is suggested here that Ordgar 9 and Ordgar 10 may have been identical with the Domesday landholder Ordar 14, who was sheriff of Cambridgeshire.
