Gerald is a Continental Germanic masculine name comprising the elements gêr ‘spear’ and walt ‘reign’ (Forssner 1916: 103-4).There are four relevant entries in the PASE corpus, of which Gervold 1 was eighth-century, Gerald 1-2 were post-Conquest, and Gerald 3 is a catch-all category for occurrences of this name in DB.
