Sigrith

Discussion of the name

The female name Sigrith was of Scandinavian origin, formed from the elements sigr ‘victory’ and fríðr ‘loved’. It was clearly used widely in the Danelaw, and a great variety of spellings are found for women of this name in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, though none of them follows the DB spellings in Seg– (Fellows Jensen 1968: 234–5).

One other woman of this name is recorded in PASE, Sigrida 1, using the spelling of the name in the source. She may have in fact been identical with Sigrith 2, and even with Sigrith 3.
